Never worked with leather before? Neither had I until today! I’d been hanging on to these beautiful pieces of metallic leather for nearly three years until I finally figured out what to make with them. Zippy leather pouches are just the most useful things to have in your bag and also some of the cutest things to collect. Adding some hearts gives it the festive-love-feels you need for Valentine’s Day but the electric blue and metallics makes it cute for any time of the year!
This DIY leather pouch would make a fantastic gift for anyone including yourself! Plus you could do any kind of design you want.
Find a shape you like and print out a template. I chose a heart and printed out a few different sizes. I used some tape to stick the template to the leather and very very carefully cut out the hearts on the extra piece of leather.
Cut out some fabric pieces that are fractionally smaller than your pieces of leather. These will be used as the lining.
Again using tape to hold the hearts in place, I sewed around the edges of each heart to the middle of the piece of leather I chose for the front of the pouch. I also sewed the smallest heart to the back piece.
Pop the front piece of leather on top of a fabric piece of lining then align close to the teeth of the zip (which should be facing up). You want to use clips to hold everything together. Leather is less forgiving than fabric and if you were to use pins, they would leave holes.
Sew along the top to attach the zip to the lining and front piece of leather.
Repeat the same process to attach the back piece of leather and lining to the other side of the zip.
Chop off any zip teeth that are poking out past the edge of the leather.
Fold the pouch in half along the zip so it's the right way round and tuck in the remaining zip ends. You'll want to catch them in the seam as you sew up the edges.
Sew it all together! Sew down the sides making sure that no lining or zip ends are poking out.
To finish off, hand sew around the end of the zips to make sure the zip doesn't zip itself off.
