MINI GADGET FAVOURITE – THE HTC RE

MELBOURNE

As much as I love my fancy pro cameras this strange little orange stick is my favourite. This bizarre little guy who looks like a periscope (which is why I named mine Perry), is actually the HTC Re, an action camera similar to a GoPro. It shoots photos and videos and automatically turns on when you hold it so it’s the best travel companion (plus it’s waterproof)!

One of the best features is the app where you can view all the photos and videos you’ve just taken, and then share them online. Obviously the camera doesn’t have a view finder but the app can do that too and you can take photos and videos from within the app using this function. Plus you can even set it up to do time lapse videos!

If you’re the type of person who appreciates a good selfie, then this camera is brilliant as you don’t need a stick! Other than basically being a stick in itself, the 146 degree wide angle lens means you can fit SO MUCH in the frame. Have a look at the slideshow below and you’ll see what I mean.

How unreal is this photo I took in NYC! The wide angle makes it look seriously cool and you wouldn't get this effect on a regular camera.

When it comes to tech I liked to be totally kitted out and the accessories for the Re don’t disappoint. I have a suction mount which is great for windows (I’ve been using mine a lot in the car), and a clip on mount to attach to clothes and bags. There are a lot other things like charging stands, and leather pouches but there’s more variety in the USA.

I can't believe I haven't even mentioned the colours yet: orange (personal fave), white, navy, and teal.

On to the nitty gritty: it comes with an 8GB micro SD but you’re probably going to want to get yourself a bigger one because you’re going to take a lot of photos, trust me. It has a 16 megapixel sensor which takes either full HD 1080p videos or HD 720p in 30 fps. Similarly, you’ve got three options for photo resolution. Low (8.3 MP) and medium (12 MP) both take the really cool long photos that are 16:9. And high (16 MP) which is 4:3 so they have the same dimensions of a regular photo. I really like the wider photos so I tend to keep mine on medium.

The battery lasts for ages and there are a bunch of other features like video stabilisation and ultra-wide angle. Have a look at the HTC website for more details. You can see some of the photos I’ve taken on my travels below. They’re all completely unedited so what you see is what you get which is pretty impressive. If you want to see how the video measures up, I’m putting a video together of my recent road trip down the coast which will be up on Tuesday.

Perry is so convenient and fun to use that he has a permanent place in my handbag. Compared to other action cameras the HTC Re is not particularly expensive but you get so much more cuteness and fun!
